Shetland
Rope Grown Mussels
Location
The
cool, pristine waters that surround the Shetland Isles are an
ideal habitat for growing blue mussels (mytilis edulis). Mussels
harvested
by Shetland SeaFish are grown on ropes, ensuring the mussels never
come into contact with the seabed so they don’t ingest any
sand or grit, resulting in a lovely clean product.
The strong
tidal currents around Shetland’s voes, where the mussels
are grown, provide an abundant food supply full of natural goodness
for the mussels giving the meat a magnificent flavour.
Quality
Growing mussels in this environment produces a superior quality, larger
than an average mussel, with a thin shell and high meat content,
typically meat yields are over 30 per cent.
From harvest
to delivery to our customers, the mussels are handled with great
care, so the product arrives in the same perfect condition as
when it was harvested and just as nature intended. Post harvest,
the mussels are washed and graded, minimum size is 45mm ranging
up to a massive 70mm.
Packaging
The mussels are packed in net sacks (sizes available to suit your particular
needs) and placed in a polystyrene box with ice. The boxes protect
the product and ensure easy handling. Within the box, mussels can
be packed in 500g or 1kg retail bags, and 2kg or 5kg wholesale bags.
We can also provide 500kg or one tonne bulk bags. You decide, we’ll
provide.
Logistics
The mussels are transported live in a temperature-controlled
environment, direct to your door within 48 hours of harvesting.
Whoever you are,
wherever you are, we can bring our homegrown excellence direct to
your door.
